Neeraj Chopra wins Lausanne Diamond League creates history

Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Friday scripted history as he became the first Indian to clinch a Diamond League Meeting title by winning the Lausanne leg here.
The 24-year-old Chopra, who had pulled out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games due to a “minor” groin injury he had suffered while winning silver during the World Championships last month, hurled the spear to 89.08m in his first attempt to seal the win in style.

Chopra rested and rehabilitated for a month but it looked like the injury had not happened as he continued his vintage form. The 89.08m throw was his third career-best effort. His second throw measured 85.18m before passing on his third attempt.

His fourth throw was a foul while he again passed his fifth attempt before coming up with 80.04m in the sixth and last round. Only the top three after the fifth round get the sixth throw.
The youngster from Khandra village near Panipat in Haryana became the first Indian to win a Diamond League crown.
Before Chopra, discus thrower Vikas Gowda is the only Indian to have finished in top three in a Diamond League Meet. Gowda had completed second twice — in New York in 2012 and in Doha in 2014 — and third on two occasions — Shanghai and Eugene in 2015.
“I am delighted with my result tonight. 89m is a great performance. I am especially pleased as I am coming back from an injury and tonight was a good indicator that I have recovered well,” Chopra said after the event.
“I had to skip Commonwealth Games due to injury and I was a bit nervous. Tonight has given me much confidence to finish the season on a high, with a strong performance in Zurich DL Final.”

Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch finished second with a best throw of 85.88m while Curtis Thompson of the USA was third with a best effort of 83.72m.
Chopra qualified for the Diamond League Finals in Zurich on September 7 and 8, and also became the first Indian to do so. Despite the win, he remained in the fourth spot with 15 points — with the addition of eight points on Friday. The top six after the Lausanne leg qualify for Zurich Finals.
Vadlejch remained in the top spot with 27 points, followed by Julian Weber (19 points) of Germany and world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada (16 points). Weber and Peters did not take part in Lausanne. Peters is recovering from an injury after he was assaulted inside a boat in his country earlier this month.
Thompson and Latvia’s Patriks Gailums also qualified for Zurich Finals.

Wanda Diamond League

Chopra also qualified for the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, by breaching the 85.20m qualifying mark. Neeraj Chopra had finished second in the Stockholm leg of the prestigious event behind Peters with a national record throw of 89.94m, just 6cm short of the 90m mark, the gold standard in the world of javelin throw.
In the World Championships in Eugene, USA, he was not in the medal position till the third round but here Chopra was leading from the first throw till the end though the eight-man field was not so strong.

SC Issues Notice To Gujarat Govt Over Release Of Bilkis Bano Case Convicts

Supreme Court issued notice to the Gujarat government over the remission granted to the 11 men convicted for the rape and murder of multiple people in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case. This comes after a plea was filed against the release of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case.  Advocate Aparna Bhat and senior advocate Kapil Sibal before a bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana. Counsel submitted that they are challenging the remission order, emphasizing that a pregnant woman was raped and people were killed.

The PIL was filed by Subhashini Ali, Revathy Laul, and Roop Rekha Rani, assailing the order of the competent authority of the Gujarat government by way of which 11 persons who were accused in a set of heinous offenses were allowed to walk free on August 15, pursuant to remission being extended to them.

The petitioners contended that a grant of remission solely by the competent authority of a state government, without any consultation with the Centre, is impermissible in terms of the mandate of Section 435 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. Eleven convicts, sentenced to life imprisonment, were released from Godhra sub-jail on August 15 after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy. The convicts had completed more than 15 years in jail.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra has moved the Supreme Court challenging the release of all 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano Case on remission by the Gujarat government.

The Supreme Court on Thursday sought the Gujarat government’s response on a plea challenging the release of 11 men convicted for the gang rape of Bilkis Bano during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana also asked the petitioners to implead those who have been granted remission as parties in the matter. The bench also posted the matter for hearing after two weeks. The bench comprising Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice Ajay Rastogi, and Justice Vikram Nath however posed a query with respect to the legal bar.

Mahua Moitra proceeds Supreme Court

Three Public Interest Litigations – by Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo Member Subhashini Ali, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, and one other petitioner – have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the remission and consequent release of 11 convicts on Independence Day.

The incident turned into a huge political controversy with the special court judge who convicted the men also raising questions about the Gujarat government’s decision.”Did they ask the judge under whom the case was heard? I can tell you that I heard nothing regarding this… In such cases, the state government needs to take advice from the central government as well. Did they do that? I have no idea. If they did, what did the central government say,” Justice UD Salvi, who retired as a judge of the Bombay High Court.

“I don’t know if they went through the procedure or not,” he had added. The convicts walked out of the Godhra sub-jail on August 15 after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy. They had completed more than 15 years in jail.

The convicts were welcomed by groups linked to the ruling BJP – with sweets, hugs, and garlands. A BJP MLA was quoted as saying that the men were Brahmins with “good sanskar” (culture). Days after the convicts’ release, Bilkis Bano said it has “shaken” her faith in the justice system and left her “shocked” and “numb”. The family has been too distraught to decide on any legal step. Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was gang-raped while fleeing the violence that broke out after the Godhra train burning. Among those killed was her three-year-old daughter.

Sonali Phogat death was a pre-planned murder, not suicide

Actor and BJP leader Sonali Phogat’s daughter is seeking justice for her, alleging that her mother’s death was a planned conspiracy. Sonali Phogat, popular for her stint in Bigg Boss 14, died in Goa from a suspected heart attack on Tuesday. While the Goa police have reported that she suffered a heart attack, her family members have been constantly claiming that it was a preplanned murder

Sonali’s 15-year-old daughter spoke to news agency ANI on Wednesday night and said, “My mother deserves justice. The case requires proper investigation and the culprits should get strict punishment (sic).” Earlier, Sonali’s brother Rinku Dhaka spoke to the media and said they were not going to give their consent to conduct her postmortem until an FIR is lodged against the accused by the police.

Nephew Claims PA Conspired Her Death, Laptop Missing From Farmhouse

Sonali’s nephew went live with his allegations and claimed that a computer and a laptop are missing from her farmhouse and the police shall start investigating the conspiracy angle in the case. Vikas has claimed that Sonali’s personal secretary named Sudhir Sangwan is responsible for her death

Sonali Phogat Was Raped Repeatedly, Blackmailed By Her PA

Sonali’s younger brother Rinku Dhaka told that Sudhir used to do all the monetary transactions and paperwork. On August 22, Sonali called her younger brother-in-law Aman and told him that Sudhir has fed her something in the food due to which she is getting restless. Three years ago, Sudhir fed her food spiked with sedatives and raped her at his house in Hisar. He even made a video of the alleged crime. Sudhir repeatedly raped Sonali by blackmailing her saying that he will make the video public.

Dhaka added that even though the police lodged a complaint after the family insisted, they are not taking it seriously. The actor’s brother mentioned that the Goa Police is ‘very relaxed’ about the incident and is not cooperating with the family. He told the reports outside the Anjuna Police station, “They have just kept the complaint, but taken no legal action… If the investigation is not being done properly here, we will do a fresh post-mortem at AIIMS, either in Delhi or Jaipur.”

According to Sonali’s brother and other family members, the actor’s personal manager Sudhir Sangwan and her assistant Sukhwinder Singh are allegedly responsible for her death. Dhaka alleged that the two had been planning her ‘murder’ for a few days and they could finally give shape to their plans in Goa.

SONALI PHOGAT’s FAMILY DEMANDS CBI PROBE

Meanwhile, Sonali’s sister Raman demanded a CBI probe into the death case. She, along with her other sister Rupesh, spoke to the media earlier and alleged that even Sonali had suspected something ‘fishy’ was going on on Monday evening and she had even called them then. In her statement to the news agency, Rupesh said, “She said she wanted to talk over WhatsApp and that something fishy was going on. But she disconnected the call and then did not pick up.”

Sonali was brought to the St Anthony Hospital in Anjuna on Tuesday where the doctors declared her dead. She had gone to Goa with her team to attend an event. On Monday, between 7-8 pm, she even took to her social media to share a few pictures of herself flaunting a pink turban.

On Tuesday, the Goa Police registered a case of unnatural death in the matter, and the National Commission for Women also took cognizance of it. An official statement from the police and the hospital is awaited after the post-mortem.

Jacqueline names Nora Fatehi in response to ED

Days after being named by the Enforcement Directorate as an accused in a multi-crore money laundering case linked to alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez has now filed her reply to the central agency.

In her response, the actor said that despite cooperating with the investigative agencies, she was not being considered a ‘victim’ of the case.

Fernandez called herself a victim of the modus operandi adopted by Sukesh and alleged that the case built against her is baseless. “She is a victim of the modus operandi adopted by the main accused Mr. Sukesh Chandrasekhar. Taking the entire prosecution case to be true for the sake of arguments, even then, no case is made out against the present Respondent under the scheme of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act or any law in force. This is a case of malafide prosecution,” read a part of her response.

Jacqueline Fernandez names Nora Fatehi

Jacqueline, in her reply, also added that in the present case, at best, the allegation against her is that she is the “Recipient of the Gifts”. The record and the statement by the authority itself clearly show that she was coerced, conned, and forced into receiving the said gift. People other than her who received such gifts are made “witnesses” in the case, she said while naming actor Nora Fatehi.

Fernandez also stated in her reply that her FDs have no connection to Chandrasekhar and were created even before the conman ‘existed’. She stated that the FDs attached vide the impugned order, had no nexus with a crime nor were the Fixed Deposits created by using the alleged proceeds of crime.  “The actor claimed that deposits are from the actor`s own legitimate sources of income and much before in time from even knowing that the main accused Chandrashekhar even existed in this world,” stated the Enforcement Directorate.

The charge sheet, filed by the ED before Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh on Wednesday, names Fernandez as an accused for the first time in the case. Jacqueline Fernandez has been summoned by ED several times in the matter. ED`s earlier charge sheet did not mention her name as an accused but mentioned the detail of the statement recorded by Bollywood actors Jacqueline Fernandez and Nora Fatehi in the matter.

According to ED’s earlier charge sheet, Bollywood actors Jacqueline Fernandez and Nora Fatehi was examined and stated that the actors got top models of BMW cars, the most expensive gifts from the accused Sukesh.  ED charge sheet clearly stated that “during the investigation, statements of Jacqueline Fernandez were recorded on 30.08.2021 and 20.10.2021 Jacqueline Fernandez stated she received gifts viz – 3 designer bags from Gucci, Chanel, 2 Gucci outfits for gym wear. A pair of Louis Vuitton shoes, 2 pairs of diamond earrings and a bracelet of multi-colored stones, and 2 Hermes bracelets. She also received a Mini Cooper car which she returned.

Jacqueline Fernandez has communicated to Delhi Police via email that she won’t be able to join the investigation due to prior commitments.

Statements of Nora Fatehi were recorded under section 50 of PMLA, 2002 on 13.09.2021 & 14.10.2021 wherein she stated that she got a booking for a charity event and during the event, she was gifted a Gucci Bag and one iPhone by Leena Paulose. (Wife of Chandrashekhar) Noora further stated that Leena Paulose had called her husband and put the phone on the speaker where he thanked her and said that they were her fans. She then announced that they were going to gift her a brand new BMW car as a token of love and generosity.
