Weak story line that was exacerbated by point less love story, Ananya as choice for female lead was a wrong decision
The much-anticipated sports action film Liger, starring Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday, is now in theatres but it seems to have failed at striking a chord with the audience and critics. Since its release, the film, directed by Puri Jagannadh and also produced by him alongside Charmme Kaur and Karan Johar’s Dharma Production, has been garnering negative reviews with film critics and fans writing it off as a ‘flop’ movie.
The film failed to get favorable feedback from fans, who said it lacked a good story and seemed formula-driven, despite Vijay Deverakonda and Ramya Krishnan’s best effort. Liger also stars Ananya Panday. Liger is backed by Karan Johar, and also stars Ananya Panday, Ramya Krishnan, and Ronit Roy. It was promoted extensively as a pan-India film. Directed by Puri Jagannadh, the Telugu and Tamil versions of Liger were released on August 25. The Hindi version releases in theatres on Friday.
The film managed to have a wide release as it opened to shows as early as 4 am in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. Despite banking on great pre-release hype, Liger failed to get favorable reviews from fans

Vijay Deverkonda about Liger
Vijay spoke about Liger during a recent interview, where he said he was not scared about the film’s fate. Vijay added he had his mother’s blessings, people’s love, and God’s support. News agency ANI quoted Vijay as saying, “With Liger we expected a bit of drama…but we’ll fight. We’ve put our heart into making this film. And I believe that I am correct. I feel that there is no room for fear, when I had nothing, I didn’t fear, and now after having achieved something, I don’t think there needs to be any fear even now. Maa ka aashirwaad hai, Logon ka pyaar hai, bhagwaan ka haath hai, andar aag hai, Kaun rokenge dekh lenge (We have mother’s blessings, people’s love, God’s support, a fire inside us, we will see who will stop us)!”
Director Puri Jagannadh, who has given several memorable films in the past, looks totally out of form. Liger took three years to make, but the story doesn’t show that. It is a story that is so stale that even a child could predict the proceedings. You get no justifiable backstory as to why Balamani and Liger chose MMA as a life goal. But, Puri Jagannadh refuses to believe it and stretches it further with literally zero stakes. The story takes us to the US and then introduces boxing legend Mike Tyson as Mark Henderson. While this cameo is intended to bring the much-needed high, it turns out to be unintentionally funny.
